Overview
SkyCommander provides a full duplex, broadband link on both civil and military Ka-band satellites from anywhere in the world, even in the most adverse weather and environmental conditions.
This latest-generation SOTM terminal integrates the best of 2 axis mechanical tracking systems, with breakthrough pointing algorithms based on hyper-complex mathematics and satellite positions upgraded in real-time using NORAD data. The horn array antenna has the best high-efficiency phased array technology and superlative RF-beam control.
This terminal is compatible with any type of modem and being extremely compact it can be installed in very limited spaces on any type of vehicle. Its speed and precision of pointing ensure a dynamic, always impeccable connection with the satellite even during high speed movements on the most inaccessible terrains of the typical operational scenarios.

Radiofrequency
The RF radiation panel can be equipped with a 5W, 25W or 50W BUC. The radiation lobes and efficiency remain optimal to any degree of pointing in space both in azimuth and elevation and this feature distinguishes it from all other satcom on the move equipment.
The use of horn array antenna provides peculiar advantages with respect to printed phased array or classic dishes: the nominal (relative) efficiency is higher, the equivalent gain using a conventional parabolic reflector needs more than 15% of irradiant surface to be achieved, and on top of this the aspect-ratio of the horn array panel gives possibility to create more compact and aerodynamic SOTM systems perfectly suitable on vehicles and aircraft. The horn array modularity enhances the capability to deliver to the market custom solutions with shorter design time.
Working Principle
The single radiating elements consist of optimized profiled circular horn antenna handling both receiving and transmitting bands with high efficiency and good cross-polar discrimination performance. The number and distribution of the radiant elements has been studied to obtain the ideal combination between transmitted and emitted radiation, the design has been thought to minimize the general dimensions and complexity of the recombination lines. In order to produce a constructive interference, all the radiating elements have to be in phase. This feature is ensured feeding them by means of two rectangular wave-guides feeding networks of equal length, one associated to the LHCP and the other to the RHCP port.
Mechanical
During the mechanical design of the entire antenna no compromises have been accepted: harmonic gearboxes have been used where backlash phenomena could have affected tracking accuracy, in combination with brush-less or servo motor for smooth and precise movement. Extensive use of metal and polymer 3d printed parts has been made, to optimize weights and mass distribution. The Pedestal is designed to be installed in a protected environment (inside the Radome). The mechanical design guarantees certification according to the MIL-STD-810G (Operational & Storage Temperature, Salt Mist, Shock) and MIL-STD-167-1A (Random and Sinusoidal Vibrations). The load-bearing components are made of materials resistant to oxidation and corrosion, further protected with passivation, anodizing and chromating treatments. This design involves massive use of Carbon Fiber and composed materials, which are necessary to ensure adequate structural rigidity and reduced weight.
